My kids provide me with a lot of inspiration and teachable moments. This morning started rough as some do with a teen, pre-teen, and a lack of coffee. Snippy comments. Harsh tones. Grumpiness.
True. There were also some sheepish apologies before they headed to the bus. I hugged them and sent them on their way with our family hashtag…yes, we have a family hashtag. Mostly started in fun but it is now part of our daily routine. Each morning when they get on the bus I do ask them to text me, I’m a mom, we worry!
Unfortunately, TheRebel’s phone just wasn’t working today. No outgoing or incoming texts. So I told her brother she just needed to turn it off and back on again. She did. It worked. Her simple act of resetting the phone was all that was needed. Maybe the network was bogged down or her phone just needed a break, who knows?
Isn’t life sometimes as frustrating and aggravating as a rough morning and a malfunctioning phone?? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a simple solution like a reset button?
Look at Matthew 11:28 NLT, “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
There’s your simple reset. When all the stress is too much to handle you can give it to the Lord. Jesus goes on in verses 29-30 to say, “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Occasionally a reset is just what is needed. I know this is true for me. I reset by backing away from social media for a day or two. I read a book, listen to music, craft, or bake. I also take the things that are bothering me and I give them up in prayer. I do just as Jesus instructed and I turn those burdens over to him.
Lord, sometimes life is just plain stressful. Thank you for offering to carry our burdens no matter how big or small. Thank you for being our reset when we need it. In your name, amen.
